Exploring Masculinity with Young Men in Schools
About This Event
As part of the 4 Corners Festival theme of Journey, this day-long exploration focuses on what it means to be male in the 21st century—through the voices, experiences, and insights of young men, and the reflections of those who accompany them on that journey.
Morning – Exploring Masculinity with Young Men in Schools Workshops with young men (aged 13–18) from Boys’ Model (North Belfast) and De La Salle (West Belfast) will open space for honest conversation about how masculinity is shaped, tested, and expressed in everyday life.
After viewing a short film addressing domestic abuse, participants will reflect on their own experiences, attitudes, and aspirations through guided discussion. Themes will include the pressures of proving oneself, gender roles and stereotypes, positive male influences, non-violence, and what it means to show empathy and care. Insights from these sessions will inform the afternoon gathering.
Afternoon – Reimagining Masculinity: Insights for Those Working with Young Men.
This gathering brings together youth practitioners, educators, and community leaders to reflect on young men’s perspectives and consider how we can foster respect, non-violence, and authentic, inclusive masculinities.
For those working with young men in schools, youth work, community, or faith settings, it offers space to pause and listen deeply to their lived realities, hopes, and challenges.
Together we will explore what supports young men on their journey toward empathy, confidence, and integrity, and how we can create environments that encourage reflection, belonging, and emotional honesty.
The afternoon aims to translate insight into action—strengthening practices that build empathy, integrity, and respect, and helping young men to express strength through empathy, integrity, and genuine connection.
